SMALL LIBRARIES IN BIG DIALOGUE FOR CHANGES

XVI Conference of the Serbian Library Association
SMALL LIBRARIES IN BIG DIALOGUE FOR CHANGES
National Library of Serbia, Belgrade,
12-13 December 2019

The XVI conference is organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Media and the National Library of Serbia.

Knowledge is power.

AIM AND TOPICS

The 16th conference of the Serbian Library Association tends to open a new space for dialogue on topics that primarily deal with small or smaller libraries, so as to call attention of the professional public to this numerous and diverse segment of library and information science. By small libraries we imply a wide range of institutions and organizations within library and information science that have not been in the spotlight of the SLA conferences so far: libraries with only one employee, special libraries and library and information centers, academic libraries and those belonging to the scientific research institutions, public libraries (smaller city and municipal libraries), school libraries etc. In this case the notion of a small library is in no way limited to the size of the book holdings, number of employees or library users, but it refers to putting a large number of organizations that offer library and information services and protect cultural or scientific heritage, into a common context of dialogue. For that reason the Serbian Library Association invites all interested professionals, librarians, researchers, students to participate in the conference and contribute to better understanding of library management of such libraries and their position, as well as to start the dialogue that would enable the fulfillment of preconditions for making better changes both through formal activities undertaken by institutions or through informal ways such as networking or cooperation among individuals.

This year’s conference will provide opportunity and time to those who want to show positive work experience of small libraries, such as examples of good practice, successfully realized projects, untraditional initiatives that gave remarkable quantitative or qualitative results in practice, cooperation among colleagues in the country and abroad that brought innovations to the work of small libraries etc. Apart from the main topic “Small Libraries in Big Dialogue for Changes”, we are interested in hearing and learning about the following subtopics:

– How can small libraries today meet the demands of tomorrow

– Small libraries and Big Data

– Who are the librarians of the 21st century: change management skills

– Three-In-One: working in a library with only one employee

– Professional competence and new skills in small libraries: work organization, time management, use of web applications

– Interinstitutional and intersectoral collaboration that gives results

– From problem to solution: experiences of small libraries

– From other perspective: national, university and parent libraries toward small libraries

– Change of the perception of a small library in a knowledge society of the 21st century: marketing, advertising, visibility

The suggested subtopics are just some of the possible topics and they should not restrict creative and proactive approach of the interested authors. The Serbian Library Association is open to panel session proposals that would include several presenters with similar topics.

FORMAT AND SUBMISSION OF PAPERS

The conference will include short works/presentations (10-minute presentations), panel sessions and poster sessions.

The Serbian Library Association encourages the use of PowerPoint presentations, audio and video recordings, PechaKucha presentations and other dynamic techniques for the presentation of ideas and results, but it does not restrict the authors of the accepted papers to use their 10-minute time in any way that want.

Panel sessions will enable the dialogue of several participants of the discussion within 90 minutes with the audience being allowed to ask questions. Panel session proposals are submitted with a title, explanation of the topic and list of the panel participants.

Poster sessions include the poster presentation and attendance of at least one of the authors who would present the poster, its content and who would distribute additional materials and share pieces of information with the interested participants of the conference. The poster session has a specific schedule within the program of the Conference. The poster size should be 80×140 cm in portrait orientation.

In case of a large number of papers with a similar topic, the Serbian Library Association can organize a preconference.

The official languages of the conference are Serbian and English. Simultaneous translation will be provided.

We invite all interested authors to send abstracts both in Serbian and English up to 300 words, with contact information, professional affiliations and information on format (whether it is a short paper, poster or panel session proposal) to the address konferencija2019@bds.rs by September 20th, 2019.

The authors of the accepted papers will be informed by October 15th, 2019.

Abstracts of the accepted papers, posters or panel sessions will be available both in Serbian and English on the website of the Conference by December 1st, 2019.

Proceedings of the reviewed papers from the conference will be printed in 2020.
